On March 11, Japan suffered one of the worst earthquakes in history. It was followed by a tsunami and an ongoing crisis at a nuclear plant. The scope of the devastation is unprecedented: more than 13,000 dead, more than 15,000 missing, and nearly a quarter of a million people forced to live in shelters. The cost of the damage is estimated to be $200–$300 billion. This comes at a time when Japan was just trying to pull out of a long recession, its national debt is worse than America’s, and it has a very small philanthropic sector to lean on. The people of Japan need our help!

This benefit will feature great food, a wonderful concert, and a silent auction. We would be delighted to have you attend this important event, should your schedule permit. At this moment we can confirm performances by Grammy Award winner and legendary jazz pianist David Matthews, leader of the Manhattan Jazz Quintet (MJQ); Michelle Kim, assistant concertmaster of the NY Philharmonic; Gay Willis, award-winning soprano and Broadway star; and shamisen master Yukio Koma. Our silent auction will feature a great array of items including a behind-the-scenes tour of the Today Show donated by NBC news anchor Ann Curry; tickets to the Tony-winning Broadway musical Avenue Q; tickets to a Red Bulls soccer match; jewelry; accessories; gift certificates for spa services and restaurants; electronics; and much more. Updates will be posted on the event website (http://on.fb.me/SOLTJ) as they are confirmed. All proceeds will go to two wonderful nonprofit relief organizations that are working on the ground in Japan: Megumi and the Iwate Prefecture Disaster Relief Fund.

If you can attend, please register at http://on.fb.me/SOLTJ. If you are unable to attend, we would genuinely appreciate any donation you might to able to make. You can send a check to Doublestop Foundation at 96 Linwood Plaza #119, Fort Lee, NJ 07024 (please indicate that it is for Sending Our Love to Japan). Donations for the silent auction are also welcome.

We do hope you will join us for this memorable evening.
