One month after Benesse America, Inc., launched “StraightAce” (www.straightace.com ), a new math tutoring smartphone application for middle school students (grades 6–8), UNIVA America, Inc., organized a “Mad About Math” contest on December 5, 2012, at the Variety Boys & Girls Club in the Astoria section of Queens. Six contestants from each grade got onto the stage to solve math problem using new iPad Minis. The children in the audience also had a chance to vie for prizes as they answered questions that were shown using a large-screen projector, creating a lively event from start to finish. The children showed a great deal of interest in this new learning app that they can use with their favorite devices, and we received many positive comments, such as, “I could actually enjoy studying math with this app.” Because the event drew children from the targeted age group, we were able to get a great deal of useful and direct feedback. In addition to the children and their parents, we also invited a New York City Council member from Queens who is a leader on education policy, numerous educators, and leading local media in NYC, who were able to see the children actually using the application and having fun with math. It was a lively and fun atmosphere, and those in the audience of roughly 150 people had an excellent opportunity to see for themselves what a promising and useful app StraightAce truly is.
